Springfield. Illinois Union Station Union Station was designed in the Richardson Romanesque style in 1896 as a combined passenger terminal for several railroads serving Springfield. The station closed in 1971 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has been extensively restored and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
